Abstract
This study explores the stigma experienced by childhood cancer survivors, and how they respond to social stigma attached to their identity as cancer survivors. In-depth interviews with 31 adolescent and young adult survivors of childhood cancer were conducted. The participants reported that they had experienced bullying and harassment from peers and co-workers, prejudicial insults, avoidance, social rejection and isolation, and discrimination in employment opportunities. As a consequence of these stigma experiences, the participants reported internalized feelings of negative perceptions about the cancer survivor, feeling anxious about disclosing their cancer history, feeling self -conscious about being different from others, and disclosing a cancer history selectively and building limited social relationships. In order to promote a cancer survivor¡¯s psychological well-being and quality of life, the results of the study inform intrapersonal, interpersonal and structural interventions for cancer survivors who are traumatized from stigma experiences.
